MAN Engines Expands Maritime Portfolio with New D3872 Engine at SMM 2026
At SMM 2026, MAN Engines will be showcasing a single-stage MAN D3872 for heavy-duty or on-board engine applications. The exhaust gas aftertreatment shown can also be seen at the trade fair.

MAN Engines will present its expanded portfolio of maritime powertrain systems, including the new 30-litre D3872 V12 engine, at the SMM 2026 trade fair in Hamburg, Germany, from September 1 to 4. The launch focuses on addressing continuous high-output power demands and strict industrial emissions control standards across workboat, diesel-electric, and heavy-duty maritime applications.

V12 Engine Specifications For Maritime Applications
The MAN D3872 V12 engine expands the 30-litre segment for applications requiring high continuous output and flexible integration. For on-board power generation and diesel-electric propulsion systems, the engine delivers 800 kW or 840 kW at 1,500 rpm, and 960 kW at 1,800 rpm. Within heavy-duty operations, the unit provides outputs of 735 kW and 920 kW at 1,800 rpm. The system's mechanical design maintains power density and compact dimensions while supporting continuous loads. Medium-duty configurations offer 1,213 kW and 1,324 kW, while light-duty applications requiring dynamic operation reach outputs of 1,471 kW and 1,618 kW. An on-board genset featuring the MAN D3872 will also be exhibited by genset manufacturer Lindenberg-Anlagen at their neighboring booth during the event.

Modular Exhaust Gas Aftertreatment Integration
To meet varying global regulatory standards, the engine platform accommodates multiple emission compliance strategies. Configurations are available for the IMO Tier II emission standard without additional exhaust gas aftertreatment. For stricter requirements, a modular exhaust gas aftertreatment system is integrated directly into the maritime powertrain systems. This setup utilizes a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system to achieve IMO Tier III and EPA Tier 3 and Tier 4 compliance. Furthermore, the integration of a diesel particulate filter with the SCR system enables full compliance with EU Stage V standards for both generator and heavy-duty operations. The engine, exhaust gas aftertreatment, and control system operate as a single certified unit to ensure operational safety and industrial emissions control.

Resource-Saving Engine Remanufacturing Process
Alongside new engine production, the introduction of MAN Genuine remanufactured engines addresses resource conservation within maritime maintenance. This factory-level reconditioning process restores marine engines to defined specifications, ensuring they meet original quality requirements and carry identical warranty conditions to new units. Based on an operational study of the MAN D2842 engine, this standardized remanufacturing process can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by up to 72 percent compared to the manufacturing of a completely new engine. The systematic reuse of core components directly reduces raw material consumption while extending the lifecycle of existing propulsion systems.

Additional Context:
This section details technical specifications and competitive benchmarking not included in the original product announcement

Within the heavy-duty 30-litre marine diesel sector, the MAN D3872 competes with established platforms such as the Caterpillar C32 and the MTU Series 2000. Competitive benchmarking in this category focuses on continuous power density, physical footprint, and compliance with stringent emissions frameworks like EU Stage V and IMO Tier III. Modern V12 architectures utilize high-pressure common rail injection and advanced engine control units to maximize power-to-weight ratios. The integration of modular SCR systems and diesel particulate filters operates as the standard technical mechanism across these brands to satisfy EU Stage V particulate and nitrogen oxide limits without requiring extensive engine room modifications.
