AXA, ICEYE strike landmark deal in ultra-high-quality SAR data usage for tracking extreme weather events

AXA Digital Commercial Platform has entered a data partnership with ICEYE to integrate synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite imagery into its risk monitoring and analytics capabilities for extreme weather events.

The collaboration brings ICEYE’s space-based SAR data into AXA’s digital risk platform, allowing floods, wildfires, hurricanes and other natural hazards to be monitored with high spatial resolution and frequent revisit rates. SAR technology enables consistent data acquisition regardless of cloud cover, smoke, darkness or adverse atmospheric conditions, addressing key limitations of optical Earth observation systems.

ICEYE operates a constellation of SAR microsatellites capable of delivering imagery with ground resolution down to approximately 25 cm. The system provides near real-time coverage and supports continuous monitoring of rapidly evolving events. Beyond raw imagery, ICEYE combines SAR data with analytics models to generate flood extent and damage assessments with high positional accuracy, supporting both immediate response and post-event analysis.

By integrating this data stream, AXA Digital Commercial Platform strengthens its ability to support predictive risk assessment and situational awareness across climate-related hazards. The platform is designed to aggregate multiple data sources and analytical tools to support decision-making in areas such as natural catastrophe risk, infrastructure exposure and operational continuity.

The agreement reflects growing demand within the insurance and risk management sectors for objective, high-frequency Earth observation data that can support prevention, preparedness and loss assessment. SAR-based monitoring is increasingly used by public authorities, emergency services and commercial operators due to its reliability in complex environmental conditions.

ICEYE’s SAR capabilities are already deployed across government, civil protection and defence applications, including use by several NATO member states. For AXA, access to this satellite data expands the technical foundation of its digital risk services, particularly for climate-driven events where rapid detection and consistent coverage are critical.
