Localized Manufacturing of Rugged 3U VPX Defense Computing Platforms

Kontron has initiated U.S.-based manufacturing of its VX307H rugged 3U VPX compute platform to increase supply chain resilience within the defense sector. The transition supports high-reliability aerospace and defense operations by locally producing computing hardware designed for sensor fusion, command and control, and tactical-edge data processing.

Production Localization and Supply Chain Operations
The shift in manufacturing takes place at Nextek, a Kontron facility in Huntsville, Alabama, where operations cover the entire sequence from printed circuit board (PCB) assembly through final system testing. By localizing production, the manufacturing model transitions from build-to-order to build-to-stock. This operational change improves product availability and accelerates delivery timelines for the defense manufacturing supply chain.

The Huntsville facility holds AS9100 and ISO 9001 certifications alongside ITAR registration. It adheres to IPC workmanship standards, ensuring the traceability and testing protocols required for mission-critical electronics. According to Dan Meeks, President of Nextek, localizing production provides users with a direct path from manufacturing and testing through to long-term lifecycle support. This strategy was presented to the industry at the AUSA 2026 tradeshow (October 12–14, 2026, Washington, D.C.).

3U VPX Architecture and Sensor Fusion Capabilities
The VX307H compute platform operates on Intel Xeon D-2700 and D-2800 series processors, scaling up to 20 cores. It provides up to 100 Gigabit Ethernet network interfaces and utilizes PCIe Gen4 to manage high-bandwidth data transfers. Designed in accordance with Sensor Open Systems Architecture (SOSA) requirements, the system includes a hardware root of trust to secure cryptographic operations and maintain firmware integrity.

These technical parameters support intensive processing workloads, including autonomous systems, 5G tactical-edge computing, and complex command and control operations. As part of a broader expansion in domestic VPX manufacturing, production of the VX3060 and VX30101 platforms is scheduled to follow this initial release.
