The Irish Department of Defence and the French Direction Générale de l'Armement (DGA) have contracted Thales to supply a network of mobile radar systems for national airspace monitoring. The procurement includes four long-range and one multi-mission radar units designed to establish a fully integrated air picture for defense operations.
Procurement and Industrial Cooperation
Establishing a comprehensive air surveillance network requires continuous tracking of varying altitudes across broad geographic zones, necessitating highly mobile and resilient sensor networks. To address this technical requirement, the Irish Department of Defence utilized a cooperative agreement with the French DGA, the national defense procurement agency, to acquire specialized surveillance hardware from Thales. This government-to-government procurement mechanism facilitates the integration of established European defense infrastructure into Ireland's national security framework, with Thales acting as the primary original equipment manufacturer.
Technical Architecture and Sensor Capabilities
The hardware deployment consists of four Ground Master 400 Alpha (GM400α) radars and one Ground Master 200 Multi-Mission All-in-one (GM200 MM/A) radar. The GM400α operates as a long-range sensor featuring a six-second update rate, utilizing computational processing power to maintain tracking fidelity through dense environmental clutter. For varied operational profiles, the GM200 MM/A simultaneously detects and tracks targets from low to high altitudes. Thales is responsible for the manufacturing and delivery of these sensor systems, which will function as the foundational detection layer of the Irish air surveillance architecture.
Physical Deployment and System Mobility
Engineered for rapid physical deployment and operational survivability, both radar systems prioritize mobility to mitigate the physical vulnerabilities associated with fixed sensor installations. The GM400α is engineered to fit within a standard 20-foot ISO container equipped with an internal lifting system. Similarly, the GM200 MM/A utilizes an autonomous configuration, consolidating the radar antenna, mechanical mast, and independent power generator unit within a single 20-foot shelter. The system is designed for direct transport via standard military trucks and can initiate full operational tracking within 15 minutes of arriving at a designated deployment site. Initial hardware deliveries to the Irish Defence Forces are scheduled for 2027.
Operational Impact
Once fully deployed and networked, these mobile sensor platforms will generate Ireland's first fully Recognised Air Picture. By distributing these autonomous tracking nodes, defense operators can maintain continuous, overlapping airspace awareness while retaining the mechanical capability to rapidly relocate hardware assets in response to specific operational requirements.
