Safran Selected to Supply Advanced Observation Systems for Bundeswehr Infantry Modernization

Safran Electronics & Defense has received a major order to supply its MOSKITO and SHARPCROW portable observation systems for the German Armed Forces. Rheinmetall Electronics, acting as the prime contractor for the Infanterist der Zukunft program, selected the electro-optical technology to equip medium and heavy infantry forces with advanced target detection and tactical situational awareness capabilities.

Multi-Channel Observation and Geolocation
The contract includes the delivery of over a thousand MOSKITO systems, which function as multifunction observation units. To meet the operational requirement for a compact and lightweight system, the MOSKITO unit weighs less than 1.3 kilograms including batteries. It integrates day and night vision channels, a laser range-finder capable of measuring distances up to 10,000 meters, and precise target geolocation mechanisms through satellite navigation and a digital magnetic compass. This sensor fusion enables dismounted soldiers to conduct rapid detection, identification, and localization of targets across various operational environments.

Electro-Optical Target Acquisition Technology
In addition to the MOSKITO units, the procurement includes several hundred SHARPCROW handheld electro-optical observation systems. The SHARPCROW architecture integrates thermal imaging, low-light imaging sensors, and a direct optical day channel. By combining target location capabilities with digital reporting functions, the system allows infantry personnel to share critical battlefield data through military networks. These features support faster, more informed tactical decision-making by improving environmental comprehension during land operations.

Infantry Modernization and Digital Connectivity
The Bundeswehr is advancing the modernization of its dismounted forces through the Infanterist der Zukunft (Infantryman of the Future) program. As the flagship soldier system for the German Armed Forces, the initiative provides digitally connected capabilities to enhance survivability, command and control, mobility, and endurance. Providing positioning insight regarding the industrial supply chain, Marzell Schiller, CEO of Safran Electronics & Defense Germany, noted that the observation systems will be manufactured in Germany to equip soldiers with the capabilities required for current land operations.

Additional Context:
This section details technical specifications and competitive benchmarking not included in the original product announcement

Within the military optronics market for dismounted soldiers, handheld target acquisition systems are evaluated on size, weight, power, and sensor integration. Competitors such as Thales and Teledyne FLIR offer comparable electro-optical devices featuring thermal sensors and eye-safe laser rangefinders. Standard benchmarking criteria require these systems to detect targets at ranges exceeding 3,000 meters while maintaining a portable form factor. The Safran MOSKITO distinguishes itself by maintaining a total system weight below 1.3 kilograms, whereas many competing legacy systems range from 1.5 to 2.5 kilograms. This weight reduction is achieved through integrated modular satellite navigation components and power-efficient architectures that allow continuous operation on standard commercial batteries.
