Blockchain‑Enabled Framework for 5G Non‑Terrestrial Networks

Keysight Technologies has been selected by the European Space Agency (ESA) to lead a three-year development program to create secure, blockchain-enabled anomaly detection for 5G non-terrestrial networks. Working alongside Sateliot, the initiative combines design, testing, artificial intelligence, and blockchain technologies to establish verifiable trust frameworks across space-based communication systems.

Context of the Cooperation
As satellite communication constellations expand, space-based non-terrestrial networks (NTN) face increasing operational complexity across interactions between orbital payloads, ground infrastructure, and terrestrial 5G networks. Managing these multi-domain connections introduces challenges related to operational security, quality of service, and confidence in network behavior. Looking toward future 6G architectures, autonomous and artificial intelligence-driven network operations require trusted, verifiable data protected against spoofing, tampering, and external cyber threats.

To address these security and operational challenges, cooperation was established under ESA’s Space for 5G/6G & Sustainable Connectivity program line within the Advanced Research in Telecommunications Systems (ARTES) framework. The collaboration combines Keysight’s test and measurement capabilities with Sateliot's satellite integration experience to build an integrated trust architecture.

Technical Solution and Responsibilities
The technical solution focuses on establishing a secure, verifiable trust framework for NTN environments across the entire lifecycle, from manufacturing to in-orbit operation. Responsibilities are divided across the participating entities to align test software with spaceflight hardware:
  • Keysight Technologies serves as the prime contractor, leveraging its design, test, and measurement expertise to integrate blockchain, artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and digital calibration certificates into the network lifecycle.
  • Sateliot supports key technical development and oversees satellite mission integration.
At a system level, the platform applies artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms for autonomous anomaly detection while anchoring operational telemetry and digital calibration certificates to a secure blockchain framework. This combination protects space-based IoT, 5G, and emerging 6G communications from data tampering and unauthorized network intrusion, ensuring verifiable data delivery for AI-driven space operations.

Deployment or Implementation
The three-year development program follows a multi-phase implementation roadmap. Initial project stages center on laboratory research, algorithmic modeling, and system prototyping. Subsequent phases will transition the technologies to a full in-orbit demonstration to validate blockchain-anchored trust, autonomous anomaly detection, and secure telemetry in operational satellite environments. The resulting frameworks are expected to inform future NTN operations and support the adoption of trusted space-based 5G and 6G connectivity globally.
