Rheinmetall has been awarded a contract by the Romanian government to supply 24 Skyranger 35 mobile air defense systems. The procurement is part of a broader €5.7 billion defense modernization program that also includes the delivery of seven Skynex systems and two Millennium Guns for maritime applications, aimed at enhancing very short-range air defense (VSHORAD) capabilities along NATO’s eastern flank.

Hardware Integration and Sensor Suite
The Skyranger 35 architecture integrates a 35 mm revolver cannon into an armored turret mounted on the Lynx KF41 tracked infantry fighting vehicle (IFV). The system incorporates active radar sensors and passive electro-optical (EO) tracking systems within a single vehicle envelope. This integrated sensor suite allows the platform to conduct autonomous airspace surveillance and engage aerial targets dynamically while on the move, providing persistent point and area defense for mechanized infantry formations without requiring stationary deployment.

The primary armament is specifically configured to neutralize loitering munitions, drone swarms, and conventional low-altitude aerial threats. To maximize the probability of intercept against small, high-speed, or highly maneuverable targets, the Skyranger 35 utilizes programmable airburst ammunition. By integrating these systems onto a highly mobile tracked chassis, the architecture provides a functional response to modern threat scenarios where highly mobile VSHORAD systems are required to protect critical infrastructure and ground troops from sudden, low-altitude aerial incursions.

The core of the Skyranger 35 system is the Oerlikon 35mm x 228 KDG revolver cannon, capable of a cyclic rate of fire of 1,000 rounds per minute. The system's lethality against small Unmanned Aerial Systems (sUAS) and loitering munitions relies heavily on AHEAD (Advanced Hit Efficiency And Destruction) programmable airburst ammunition. Each AHEAD projectile contains 152 heavy tungsten sub-projectiles. As a round exits the muzzle, an electromagnetic induction coil measures its exact velocity. A secondary coil instantly programs the projectile's electronic time fuse to detonate at a precisely calculated distance ahead of the incoming target. Upon detonation, the tungsten cylinders form a lethal cone-shaped cloud of shrapnel that shreds the target's control surfaces, optics, or explosive payload. This kinetic cloud approach is statistically more effective against drone swarms than direct-hit kinetic penetrators, as it requires a lower volume of fire to guarantee a catastrophic kill.
