The Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) has commissioned Thales to deliver 60 short-range battlefield radar systems to the German Armed Forces. The procurement agreement includes the supply of additional equipment, spare parts, and user training, with deliveries scheduled for 2026.
Radar Capabilities and Environmental Operation
The GO12 is a tactical reconnaissance and artillery radar capable of detecting drones and vehicles with 360-degree coverage. Designed specifically for highly mobile infantry forces, the unit features a compact sensor volume of 28 liters. This footprint allows the system to be transported in a backpack by two soldiers, alongside 15 to 20 kilograms of standard personal equipment. The radar is engineered to operate in severe weather conditions—including rain, snow, and fog—providing continuous ground surveillance in environments where optical sensors and camera drones cannot deliver usable data.
Manufacturing and Production Expansion
The GO12 radar systems are developed and manufactured at the Thales facility in Ditzingen, Baden-Württemberg. To accommodate the volume of this procurement and meet the operational demands of the armed forces, Thales is expanding its production capacity at the Ditzingen plant. The company plans to hire 300 new employees in Germany throughout 2026 to support the scaled manufacturing output. The GO12 system is currently deployed by armed forces in 20 countries, integrating established ground surveillance technologies into global defense initiatives.
