Thales and PT Len Industri are cooperating to deploy a long-range air surveillance radar network for the Indonesian Air Force. The archipelagic geography of Indonesia presents inherent operational complexities regarding continuous airspace coverage and system interoperability. To address these parameters and maintain baseline air monitoring capabilities, the Indonesian Ministry of Defence initiated the procurement of 13 ground-based long-range air surveillance radars in 2023. The integration requires direct cooperation between Thales, acting as the primary radar manufacturer, and PT Len Industri, which manages local technology integration and facilitates long-term maintenance frameworks.
Radar Architecture and C4I Integration
The deployment utilizes the GM403 long-range radar arrays, which operate in conjunction with Thales Air C4I systems, designated as SkyView. This architecture consolidates localized sensor data to generate a unified operational picture of the monitored airspace. By networking distributed radar inputs with centralized command and control interfaces, the system enables real-time situational awareness and early threat detection. The technical partnership prioritizes the transfer of maintenance protocols and operational expertise to Indonesian engineering personnel, ensuring that domestic technicians can support the radar arrays independently once deployed.
Implementation Phases and Network Expansion
The initial phase of the hardware rollout concluded with the delivery of the first two radar systems. This milestone was marked by a deployment event at the Halim airbase in Jakarta on May 18, 2026, attended by Indonesian defense officials. The installation of these initial units establishes the technical and operational baseline for the broader network. The remaining 11 radar systems are scheduled for delivery and integration over the subsequent 12-month period, which will complete the planned expansion of the operational grid across the designated territories.
Localized Engineering and Strategic Support
The joint implementation addresses the requirement for sovereign control over national defense infrastructure by localizing maintenance, engineering, and support operations. The collaboration establishes a verified base of operations for future development in command and control capabilities and facilitates ongoing radar technology transfers to the local defense industry.
