Tandem warhead technology for defeating explosive reactive armor

Modern heavy armored vehicles frequently utilize Explosive Reactive Armor (ERA) to neutralize standard munitions. The HEAT 758 addresses this within the automotive data ecosystem by employing a tandem warhead configuration. This technical approach involves an initial charge designed to neutralize external ERA modules, followed by a main charge that initiates penetration of the primary hull. The main charge is engineered to defeat up to 700mm of conventional armor, providing sufficient lethality against the most heavily protected mobile platforms currently deployed on the battlefield.

Digital integration and weapon system communication
The ammunition utilizes proprietary Firebolt technology to facilitate a digital supply chain between the projectile and the weapon system. When loaded into a Carl-Gustaf M4, the HEAT 758 communicates directly with the Fire Control Device 558. This integration automates critical aiming parameters and weapon settings, reducing the cognitive workload for the operator. The resulting decrease in human error leads to a higher first-round hit probability during combat engagements.

Deployment and manufacturing status
The effectiveness of the system was demonstrated during a live firing event held in May in Karlskoga, Sweden. The product is relevant as a response to the proliferation of reactive armor, which has degraded the performance of regular munitions. Following a successful demonstration, an undisclosed customer placed an order for the HEAT 758, and serial production is currently underway. The system allows for a reduction in the threat level to operators by increasing the standoff distance and accuracy when engaging modern armored threats.

Additional Context
This section details technical specifications and competitive benchmarking not included in the original product announcement.

The HEAT 758 competes with other shoulder-fired tandem-charge projectiles such as the Panzerfaust 3-IT (Improved Tandem) from Dynamit Nobel Defence. While the HEAT 758 achieves a penetration performance of 700mm behind ERA, the Panzerfaust 3-IT offers a comparable performance of up to 800mm, though as a disposable or specialized system it is heavier than the ammunition optimized for the Carl-Gustaf multi-purpose system. A significant technological advantage of the HEAT 758 over older systems like the RPG-29 is the Firebolt interface, which enables programmed communication with the fire control unit. This digital data exchange optimizes ballistics in real-time, a feature not present in purely mechanical or unguided competitor systems.
