The British Army is modernising its armoured forces by replacing older platforms with the Challenger 3 main battle tank, intended to offer significant improvements in lethality, survivability, and digital integration over its predecessor. This modernisation aims to address operational challenges including outdated firepower, limited ammunition commonality with NATO allies, and the need for enhanced system assurance before entering service. A key technical objective was to validate the tank’s weapon system—particularly its main armament—under operational conditions as part of a phased capability assurance programme.

To meet these goals, the tank employs a 120 mm L55A1 smoothbore gun capable of firing both modern kinetic energy anti-tank rounds and programmable multi-purpose ammunition. This gun replaces the rifled weapon of earlier British tanks, enabling NATO-standard ammunition compatibility and improved ballistic performance.

Technical Solution and Selection Rationale
The Challenger 3 programme is delivering upgraded armoured vehicles produced by Rheinmetall BAE Systems Land (RBSL), a joint venture combining British and German defence expertise. The selection of RBSL’s solution was driven by its ability to integrate advanced weapon systems—such as the Rheinmetall-manufactured smoothbore cannon—into a modernised turret and fire control architecture, enhancing operational capability while ensuring manufacturability within the UK supply chain. The solution also aligns with NATO ammunition logistics, reducing the complexity of resupply and interoperability with allied forces.

Deployment and Trial Programme
In a carefully phased deployment process, initial trials began with remote operation to assess system safety and performance. Following successful unmanned firing, RBSL personnel conducted the first crewed live firing trials of the Challenger 3 at a UK Ministry of Defence training centre in January 2026. These trials constitute the first time in more than three decades that a newly developed British main battle tank has fired its primary weapon on UK soil.

The firing activity formed part of the progressive assurance of the tank’s capabilities and systems prior to service entry. It tested the gun’s integration and performance when operated by a full crew, verifying both mechanical reliability and crew-station ergonomics under live firing conditions.

Support and Collaboration
Throughout the trials, RBSL worked closely with the UK Ministry of Defence and Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S) to plan and execute the phased testing approach. This collaborative model ensured that safety risk mitigation, system readiness, and operational requirements were consistently addressed during transitions from remote to crewed firing. According to programme stakeholders, this cooperation was central to progressing the tank toward operational service.

Results and Benefits
While quantifiable performance metrics from the live firing trials have not been published, the successful execution of crewed firing represents a key technical milestone in the Challenger 3 programme. It validates the integration of the main weapon system and supports confidence in the tank’s readiness to enter further trials and ultimately operational service. This milestone also demonstrates progress toward delivering 148 production tanks under an approximately £800 million contract, contributing to sovereign defence manufacturing and supporting hundreds of skilled jobs across the UK supply chain.

The trials underscore enhanced firepower and interoperability with allied forces through adoption of NATO-standard ammunition and reflect overall improvements in capability and systems assurance ahead of the tank’s planned entry into British Army service.
