Lightweight torpedo upgrade strengthens naval anti-submarine warfare

Northrop Grumman has been selected to manufacture and deliver the MK54 MOD 2 lightweight torpedo for the U.S. Navy, introducing a new custom-designed warhead and updated processing capabilities intended to increase effectiveness against modern undersea threats. The program builds on the existing MK54 inventory and reflects evolving requirements in anti-submarine warfare (ASW).

Incremental upgrade to an established torpedo family
The MK54 MOD 2 is designed as an enhancement to the MK54 MOD 0 and MOD 1 variants currently in service. Rather than introducing a new torpedo class, the program focuses on upgrading lethality and performance while preserving compatibility with existing launch platforms and logistics chains. This approach allows navies to modernize ASW capability without extensive changes to fleet infrastructure.

The new variant incorporates Northrop Grumman’s advanced lightweight warhead technology, combined with improved processing functions that support more effective engagement of underwater targets across diverse operational conditions.

Cooperative development and interoperability
The MK54 MOD 2 was developed under a cooperative development agreement led by the U.S. Navy, with participation from the Australian Defence Force. This collaboration supports interoperability between allied navies and reflects shared requirements for undersea warfare in both deep-ocean and littoral environments.

By aligning design, testing, and qualification across partners, the program reduces duplication and supports common operational standards for lightweight torpedoes deployed from surface ships, submarines, and maritime patrol aircraft.

Performance and operational scope
The upgraded torpedo is designed to track, classify, and engage underwater targets in all ocean environments. Improvements in processing and warhead design are intended to enhance effectiveness against a wider range of submarine threats, including those operating in acoustically complex or shallow waters.

Multi-platform firing capability remains a core requirement, ensuring the MK54 MOD 2 can be deployed from existing naval launch systems without modification.

Manufacturing and undersea integration expertise
Northrop Grumman will leverage decades of experience in weapons production, deep-ocean engineering, and undersea systems to support manufacturing, integration, and testing. This background is relevant not only for the torpedo itself, but also for ensuring compatibility with sensors, launch platforms, and test infrastructure used in naval ASW operations.

The MK54 MOD 2 program reinforces the role of incremental, standards-based upgrades in maintaining undersea warfare capability while managing cost, risk, and fleet readiness across allied navies.
