Rheinmetall and MBDA Launch Naval Laser Systems Venture

Rheinmetall and MBDA Germany have formed a joint venture to advance high-performance laser weapon systems, initially for naval deployment and subsequently for ground-based drone defense. The cooperation leverages prior demonstrator programs to provide precise, rapid-response engagement of small, agile threats.

Context of the Cooperation:
Rheinmetall, a systems integrator, and MBDA, a complex weapons developer, combine complementary expertise to address the technical challenges of integrating high-energy lasers into operational platforms. The partnership builds on prior maritime demonstrators and responds to growing requirements for short-range counter-UAV capabilities.

Technical Solution and Responsibilities:
The joint venture focuses on a laser system converting electrical power into a concentrated beam for precise engagement of small targets. Rheinmetall manages platform integration and power systems; MBDA oversees targeting, guidance, and weapon control software. The system conforms to military standards for operational reliability, energy precision, and safety.

Deployment and Implementation:
Initial trials were conducted on German Navy vessels, followed by evaluation at the Laser Competence Centre (WTD 91) in Meppen. The phased approach includes integration with existing infrastructure, operational testing, and adaptation for land-based drone defense.

Applications and Use Cases:
The system is designed for maritime defense and counter-UAV operations. It enables rapid target tracking, engagement of small unmanned aerial vehicles, and reduced reliance on conventional munitions. Operational benefits include improved reaction times, precise energy delivery, and minimized collateral effects.

Expected Impact:
The venture strengthens domestic laser capabilities, enhances operational effectiveness, and supports technological sovereignty while sustaining engineering and defense employment in Germany.
