Contract marks Spain's largest Patriot order ever
Raytheon, a business of RTX, has been awarded a contract valued at USD 1.7 billion to supply Spain with four Patriot air and missile defence fire units. The award is structured as a foreign military sales agreement.
The contract includes key system components such as multifunction radars, launchers, command-and-control stations, and associated training equipment required for system operation and integration.
Industrial cooperation and supply chain
As part of programme execution, Raytheon will work with Spanish industry partners. This includes collaboration with Sener on electro-mechanical control systems for the GEM-T interceptor missile, supporting local industrial participation within the Patriot global supply chain.
Such arrangements are intended to support in-country capability, sustainment, and long-term system readiness.
Operational role of Patriot systems
Patriot is a ground-based air and missile defence system designed to counter a range of aerial threats, including cruise missiles, tactical ballistic missiles, and other air-breathing targets. The system integrates sensors, interceptors, and command-and-control functions to support layered air defence architectures.
The system has been deployed operationally by multiple armed forces and is currently in service with 19 countries, forming a core element of their national air defence strategies.
Broader procurement context
The Spanish order comes amid continued procurement activity for Patriot systems in Europe. In 2025, Germany, the Netherlands, and Romania have also placed orders for additional Patriot capabilities, reflecting sustained demand for ground-based air and missile defence systems in the region.
The new contract reinforces Spain’s investment in modernising its air defence infrastructure in response to evolving regional and missile threat environments.
