Leonardo to Deliver Next-Generation Long-Range Ballistic Defence Radars for Italy

Leonardo has signed a contract with Italy’s TELEDIFE (Direzione Informatica Telematica e Tecnologie Avanzate) for the development and delivery of four next-generation radars designed to counter long-range ballistic threats with ranges of up to 3,000 kilometers. The agreement marks a key step in the implementation of the Michelangelo Dome advanced integrated defence system, which was officially unveiled in November.

The contract follows the recent qualification launch of the Italian SAMP/T NG surface-to-air missile system, conducted in early December, and equipped with Leonardo’s KRONOS Grand Mobile High Power Radar Sensor. Together, these developments advance Italy’s national integrated air and missile defence architecture.

Under the agreement, Leonardo will supply both Ground-Based Radar (GBR) and Mobile Long-Range Radar (MLRR) systems. The radars are based on fully digital AESA GaN technology, enabling extended detection range, high efficiency, and advanced surveillance, early warning, identification, and tracking capabilities. The systems are designed to provide real-time tactical data and cue fire control radars and effectors within open-architecture, multi-domain defence environments.

With this programme, Italy becomes the first European country to deploy a nationally developed integrated air and missile defence capability specifically designed to counter emerging long-range ballistic threats.
