BAE Systems' Azalea Satellites Launch, Advancing UK Space-Based Intelligence

Space-based sensing for defence, security, and civil applications
A new cluster of British-designed satellites has successfully reached low Earth orbit, strengthening the UK’s ability to gather intelligence, monitor threats, and support national security operations. Developed and built by BAE Systems, the Azalea mission provides space-based radio frequency (RF) sensing and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging to deliver near real-time information for defence, civil protection, and maritime security.

A major step forward for the Azalea intelligence mission
Three Azalea RF satellites, each equipped with ultra-wideband sensors, were launched aboard SpaceX’s Transporter-15 mission. Communications were established during the first available contacts, confirming successful deployment. These satellites will fly in formation at around 350 miles altitude, using their advanced RF payloads to detect, monitor, and geolocate signals across vast areas on Earth.

Joining them is an ICEYE-built SAR satellite, forming a four-spacecraft cluster that brings together RF monitoring and all-weather radar imaging. This multi-sensor combination enables the satellites to capture detailed activity patterns, even through cloud cover, and generate intelligence that can be delivered directly to operational users.

On-orbit data fusion for faster, more actionable insights
The cluster is designed to process RF and SAR data in space, reducing reliance on ground infrastructure and dramatically shortening the time from sensing to decision-making. Over the coming months, BAE Systems will test the fusion of these datasets to support missions ranging from defence intelligence and maritime monitoring to disaster response.

Each RF satellite carries the Azalea Enhanced Software Defined Radio—a fully UK-developed payload using AI to process data onboard, extract actionable intelligence, and securely transmit results back to Earth. The payload can be remotely updated in orbit, allowing rapid adaptation to new mission needs.

Strengthening the UK’s sovereign space capability
Travelling at roughly 7.6 km per second and completing an orbit every 90 minutes, the satellites represent a major private investment in the UK’s growing space sector. The project demonstrates the increasing importance of space-based intelligence for safeguarding national infrastructure, supporting armed forces, and detecting illicit activity.

With the successful launch and early operations underway, Azalea marks a critical milestone in delivering responsive, AI-enabled space technology to support the UK and its allies.
