New Agreement with Port of London Authority

Terma has announce a new 5-year framework agreement with the Port of London Authority (PLA) to update and overhaul all existing SCANTER radar systems. This agreement includes the replacement of magnetron-based radars with the supply of new transceivers and antennas where needed, enhancing the safety of navigation on the Thames and its estuary.

As part of the new agreement, Terma will supply the SCANTER 5202 and 5102 radar transceivers and antennas, update existing systems, and provide comprehensive training courses, as well as setting to work and site acceptance test services. The SCANTER 5000 series, known for its software-defined radar technology, continues to evolve, ensuring compliance with the highest International Association of Lighthouse Authorities (IALA) guidelines.

“Terma is excited to announce the new agreement with the PLA to continuously deliver and maintain our SCANTER radars. This partnership underlines our commitment to delivering high-quality equipment that enhances operational efficiency and safety, especially in one of UK’s busiest waterways,” says Steen Trier, Senior Director of Security Sales at Terma.

The collaboration between Terma and PLA began with early radar technology, paving the way for the adoption of the SCANTER 5000 series in 2011, which was rigorously tested in partnership with the PLA. Notably, this included innovative tests where a human head-sized fender was towed on the Thames to assess the radar's capability in detecting man-overboard situations and evaluating its resolution and discrimination qualities.

Rebecca Wellard, Navigation Systems Manager at the PLA said, ”Terma has long been a significant supplier to the PLA but we wanted to enhance the relationship and work more closely together to ultimately increase the value of that relationship to both companies. The new framework agreement allows us to do just that.”

Over the years, Terma has equipped 18 radar sites across the Thames, from the London Array offshore wind farm and Margate to just beyond the Thames Barrier at Charlton and Blackwall Stairs. This framework agreement demonstrates Terma's commitment to supporting the PLA with cutting-edge radar technology that contributes to the safety and smooth operation of critical maritime operations.
