Advancing 5G NR NTN Ground Systems

Integrating satellite constellations with terrestrial telecommunications networks presents significant architectural friction. Traditional satellite ground infrastructure relies heavily on proprietary, hardware-dependent systems that limit flexibility and increase deployment costs. As space operators seek to bridge mobile networks with satellite links, they face the challenge of achieving terrestrial-grade interoperability across diverse equipment vendors. Without software-defined agility, scaling services dynamically to match regional traffic demands or changing mission profiles remains inefficient and cost-prohibitive.

Virtualized Software-Defined Ground Architecture
To address these architectural limitations, Kratos utilized its OpenSpace platform, a fully virtualized and software-defined satellite ground system. The implementation integrates an OpenSpace Radio Access Network with Druid Software's Raemis 5G Core and GCT Semiconductor Holding's GDM7275X-based 5G User Equipment. Working alongside Korea-based satellite operator KT SAT, the multi-vendor system successfully executed cell search routines and registered with the core to establish two-way communication.

This software-defined approach decouples network functions from dedicated hardware, allowing satellite networks to operate similarly to terrestrial 5G infrastructure. By leveraging a virtualized framework, operators can dynamically scale services, minimize hardware dependencies, and select optimal software components for specific beams or geographic regions based on performance and cost metrics.

Industrial Applications and Ecosystem Growth
Deploying interoperable 5G NTN architectures supports the expansion of seamless global connectivity, bridging remote or underserved areas into standard mobile networks. This capability is critical for telecommunications providers and satellite operators deploying hybrid network solutions for consumer, enterprise, and government sectors. Proving native multi-vendor integration reduces the financial and technical barriers associated with single-vendor lock-in, enabling more resilient and cost-effective deployment cycles.

Additional Context:
This section details technical specifications and competitive benchmarking not included in the original product announcement.

The 5G NR Non-Terrestrial Network standard, established under 3GPP Release 17, defines specific adaptations for satellite communications, including handling large propagation delays, high Doppler frequency shifts, and wide beam footprints. Platforms like Kratos OpenSpace compete in the emerging virtualization market for satellite ground segments, moving away from legacy baseband equipment toward cloud-native, containerized architectures that comply with standards set by organizations such as the TM Forum and 3GPP. Similar efforts across the satellite industry focus on orchestrating ground segment functions via software orchestration layers to match the elasticity of modern terrestrial cloud cores.
