Space Domain Awareness Radio Frequency Intelligence Architecture

Kratos Defense & Security Solutions, Inc. has secured multiple defense contracts valued in excess of 100 million dollars to engineer prototype mission systems integrating space intelligence and digital infrastructure across space and cyber operations. The programs focus on processing complex radio frequency (RF) signals to support electronic warfare, asset targeting, and space domain awareness (SDA).

Technical Challenges in Multi-Domain Sensing
Modern orbital and electronic warfare environments require continuous, low-latency collection of contested RF signals. Operators face significant challenges in identifying, prioritizing, and assessing targets across congested orbital bands. Addressing this operational challenge requires integrating high-throughput RF sensor hardware with distributed analytic pipelines to achieve rapid battle damage assessment and real-time situational tracking without signal latency.

System Architecture and Functional Mechanisms
The engineering architecture relies on the Kratos KnownSpace Network, a commercially owned and operated digital infrastructure consisting of over 190 RF sensors distributed across more than 20 global sites. This network functions in tandem with KnownSpace Recon+ field-portable terminals, enabling tactical RF data capture directly at operational boundaries.

The software framework utilizes digital signal processing algorithms and specialized cybersecurity layers. These components ingest raw RF emissions, execute automated signal characterization, and perform precision geolocation of terrestrial and satellite transmitters. By translating physical-layer electromagnetic measurements into structured intelligence metrics, the system feeds verified telemetry directly into joint command-and-control workflows.

Deployment and Tactical Integration
Implementation focuses on deploying prototype applications across sovereign, enterprise, and edge environments. The integration process pairs centralized enterprise analytics with deployable field units, ensuring interoperability with existing defense network interfaces. Tactical operators deploy the portable SDA terminals to establish localized monitoring, while the distributed sensor network maintains persistent baseline monitoring of global satellite transponders.

Operational Impact on Targeting and Defense
The integration of wideband RF collection into joint operations provides deterministic tracking data necessary for target prioritization cycles. Automated classification of anomalous RF signatures reduces operator analysis workloads, stabilizes electronic warfare response loops, and enhances sovereign domain visibility against interference or unauthorized orbital maneuvers.

Greg Caicedo, Senior Vice President at Kratos, stated that "our systems, software and hardware support missions across SDA, command & control, satellite operations and cybersecurity," explaining the technical basis for adapting commercial architectures to meet changing space domain requirements.
