Northrop Grumman and SandboxAQ have conducted flight validation of a quantum-assisted magnetic navigation system on the Lumberjack Group 3 uncrewed aerial system (UAS). The deployment establishes an alternative positioning capability for autonomous flight platforms operating within contested digital infrastructure where Global Positioning System (GPS) signals are jammed, degraded, or unavailable.

Operational Challenge in Satellite-Denied Navigation
Uncrewed platforms reliant on satellite-based positioning systems are vulnerable to radio frequency jamming, spoofing, and signal loss in hostile electronic environments. Operating in GPS-denied airspace requires guidance systems that do not depend on external radiofrequency emissions or vulnerable satellite constellations. At the same time, integrating external sensor payloads into small-to-medium autonomous platforms requires rapid hardware and software adaptability without degrading flight stability or recovery protocols.

Technical Integration and Sensor Architecture
The technical solution couples Northrop Grumman mission kits and integrated software with SandboxAQ quantum-enabled magnetic navigation sensors. The system functions by measuring localized anomalies and variations in the Earth's natural magnetic field, cross-referencing sensor readings against geomagnetic reference maps to derive positioning data.

Responsibilities were divided across system architecture, platform mechanics, and sensor software:
  • Northrop Grumman served as the primary mission systems integrator, providing payload packages, electronic warfare architecture, and tactical data links.
  • SandboxAQ supplied the quantum sensing hardware, AI processing algorithms, and magnetic navigation software models.
  • ESAero Inc., a subsidiary of AV Inc., provided the core air vehicle and structural mechanical integration.
Flight Demonstration and Recoverability
Deployment testing was conducted at Fort Hunter Liggett, California. The test validated the platform's ability to maintain navigation accuracy in an electronically jammed environment, including over-water flight segments where optical or terrain-feature tracking is limited. While designed as a modular loitering munition and launched effect system, the flight demonstrated recovery procedures, confirming the aircraft can launch, complete planned routes via geomagnetic references, and land intact for reusable operational testing.

The architecture confirms that quantum magnetic field mapping can serve as a dependable secondary or primary positioning vector for uncrewed defense and surveillance assets, sustaining operational autonomy despite active electronic countermeasures.
