Large-aperture telescope development for deep space digital infrastructure

Schmidt Sciences requires high-sensitivity imaging for long-duration cosmic monitoring, which typically requires extended thermal stabilization periods in orbit to maintain data integrity. Raytheon is responsible for the design, technical engineering, and manufacturing of the primary optical assembly. The cooperation combines the astrophysics program requirements of Schmidt Sciences with the specialized expertise of Raytheon in adaptive telescope architectures and ultra-lightweight materials to address these operational constraints.

Technical Solution and Architecture
The system features a 3.1-meter off-axis, unobscured aperture primary light-collecting mirror designed to maximize imagery sharpness and sensor sensitivity. Constructed from advanced composite materials, the telescope maintains structural stability during environmental temperature shifts, eliminating the operational downtime usually required for thermal adjustment.

The optical assembly integrates an auto-alignment technology validated through digital twin simulations. This architecture enables the system to perform continuous, autonomous on-orbit tuning to optimize optical performance and deliver consistent, sharp imagery without ground-station intervention.

Deployment and Expected Impact
The project has completed its accelerated preliminary design review, and the hardware is currently in the production phase. Delivery of the completed telescope system to the commercial platform is scheduled for 2028.

Once deployed, the automated alignment system stabilizes data collection processes immediately upon orbital insertion. This technical approach provides accelerated data delivery to researchers studying distant planetary systems, dynamic astrophysical events, and cosmic evolution.
