Precision Strike Missile Test Demonstrates Maritime Targeting

Lockheed Martin has completed the first flight test of the Precision Strike Missile (PrSM) Increment 2 as part of the U.S. Army’s long-range fires modernization program. The test demonstrated new guidance capabilities designed to allow the missile to engage moving targets, including maritime threats.

During the trial, the missile launched from a High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) and conducted a 350-kilometer flight while collecting performance data for system validation.

Multi-Mode Seeker for Moving Targets
The Increment 2 configuration introduces a multi-mode seeker designed to provide improved targeting guidance. The system enables the missile to identify and track moving or time-sensitive targets.

This capability expands the missile’s operational role beyond fixed land targets, enabling engagement of relocating targets in both land and maritime environments.

The seeker technology supports lock-on capability during flight, allowing the missile to adapt to dynamic operational conditions.

Maritime Strike Capability
The addition of maritime targeting extends the mission scope of the Precision Strike Missile system. While earlier versions were primarily designed for land-attack missions, Increment 2 enables maritime strike operations.

This capability allows the U.S. Army to contribute to sea-denial missions in joint military operations, targeting hostile vessels or maritime threats within the missile’s operational range.

Compatibility with Existing Launch Platforms
PrSM Increment 2 is designed to remain compatible with existing launch systems already in service. The missile can be deployed from both the HIMARS launcher and the M270A2 multiple launch rocket system.

Maintaining compatibility with current launch platforms allows the upgraded missile to be integrated into existing logistics and operational frameworks without major infrastructure changes.

Program Development Status
The program is currently progressing through the technology maturation phase. Lockheed Martin is applying digital engineering methods and modular system architecture to accelerate development timelines.

A Preliminary Design Review is underway as part of the system development process. Additional flight tests are scheduled later in the year to further evaluate the missile’s capabilities and support progress toward operational deployment.
