Abaco Systems Introduces Fiber Optic FMC Module

In the defense electronics and rugged embedded computing sectors, Abaco Systems has introduced the FMC600, a fiber optic FMC module carrier designed to accelerate high-bandwidth data transfer in mission-critical systems. Equipped with two PAM4 optical modules and supporting up to eight bi-directional channels, the module enables high-speed transmission of sensor and AI-processed data across aerospace, naval and land-based platforms.

High-Bandwidth Optical Connectivity for Data-Intensive Missions
Modern defense platforms increasingly rely on AI-enabled analytics and distributed sensor networks. These architectures require rapid transport of large data volumes between processing nodes while maintaining signal integrity over long distances.

The FMC600 addresses this requirement with:
  • Up to two optical modules
  • Up to four bi-directional channels per module
  • Up to 100 Gbps aggregated bandwidth per module
This configuration supports real-time situational awareness applications where latency and throughput directly affect operational performance.

The use of PAM4 (Pulse Amplitude Modulation 4-level) signaling increases data throughput per lane compared to traditional NRZ signaling, enabling higher bandwidth within existing physical constraints.

Modular Design for Aerospace and Naval Platforms
The FMC600 follows a modular architecture, allowing system architects to configure the optical interface according to bandwidth and redundancy requirements. The carrier is available with up to two Samtec FireFly optical modules, each field-proven in high-performance embedded applications.

This approach supports incremental system upgrades. As data requirements grow—particularly in AI-driven processing environments—developers can scale optical bandwidth with limited hardware redesign.

Ruggedization for Harsh Operating Environments
Designed to meet Abaco’s ruggedization standards, the FMC600 is suited for deployment in environments exposed to vibration, temperature variation and mechanical stress. Such robustness is critical in airborne ISR systems, naval combat platforms and mobile ground vehicles where uptime and durability are essential.

Fiber optic connectivity also provides inherent advantages in electromagnetic immunity and signal integrity compared to copper-based interconnects, particularly in electrically noisy defense environments.

Enabling AI-Driven Embedded Systems
As embedded systems integrate increasingly complex AI workloads, high-speed optical interconnects become a key element of system architecture. The FMC600 supports distributed computing designs in which sensor data, accelerators and processors exchange large datasets in real time.

By combining PAM4-based optical transmission, modular scalability and rugged mechanical design, the FMC600 provides a transport layer suited for next-generation defense embedded computing platforms requiring secure, high-throughput data movement across air, land and sea deployments.
