Stratasys has introduced a structured qualification program for SAF™ PA12, a nylon powder intended to enable scalable, traceable, and production-ready additive manufacturing using Selective Absorption Fusion technology.
Addressing production qualification in polymer additive manufacturing
Manufacturers adopting polymer additive manufacturing for end-use parts often face extended material qualification timelines, particularly in regulated sectors such as aerospace and defense. These timelines can limit the transition from pilot projects to serial production, affecting modernization and reshoring initiatives.
The new qualification program targets these constraints by applying a defined validation framework to SAF PA12, focusing on material performance consistency and traceability required for production environments.
Extending AIS to SAF technology
The qualification program extends Stratasys’ Advanced Industrial Solution (AIS™) framework to Selective Absorption Fusion technology. AIS is designed to combine material control, process stability, and data traceability to support industrial qualification and repeatable manufacturing outcomes.
By applying AIS to SAF, manufacturers can align material qualification with production workflows earlier in the adoption cycle. This approach is intended to reduce the time required to move from initial trials to routine manufacturing on SAF platforms, improving predictability within the digital supply chain.
SAF PA12 material characteristics
SAF PA12 is a nylon powder developed to meet industrial requirements for mechanical performance, batch-to-batch consistency, and documentation. Within the AIS framework, the material is evaluated under defined process parameters to generate validated datasets that support engineering decisions and compliance requirements.
The focus on traceability and consistency is particularly relevant for aerospace and industrial applications where qualification evidence must be maintained across long production lifecycles.
Industry-led qualification via NCAMP
Material qualification is being conducted through an industry-led collaboration using the NCAMP process, operated by the National Center for Advanced Materials Performance. NCAMP provides a standardized methodology for generating shared qualification data that can be referenced across multiple programs.
Early participants in the SAF PA12 qualification effort include Boeing, General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Northrop Grumman, and Raytheon, alongside additive manufacturing service providers such as Additive at Scale, Bifrost Manufacturing, 3D Composites, Rapid PSI, and Stratasys Direct Manufacturing.
This collaborative model is intended to validate SAF PA12 across a range of machines, builds, and applications, supporting repeatable outcomes in demanding production contexts.
Application scope and manufacturing impact
Validated SAF PA12 data is expected to support use cases spanning functional prototyping, tooling, and serial production components. For manufacturers, access to shared qualification data reduces duplication of testing effort and lowers barriers to enterprise-scale adoption of polymer additive manufacturing.
Extending AIS coverage to SAF technology broadens Stratasys’ production-focused offering beyond its initial AIS-supported platforms, enabling more manufacturers to deploy qualified additive processes aligned with industrial requirements.
Implications for scalable additive production
The SAF PA12 qualification program reflects a broader shift in additive manufacturing from prototyping toward qualified production. By combining a production-oriented material, a standardized qualification framework, and industry collaboration, the initiative is intended to improve confidence in additive manufacturing as a repeatable, scalable production method for aerospace and industrial applications.
