Snowbird Integrates Meltio Engine Blue for Deployable Defense Manufacturing

Snowbird Technologies and Meltio have announced a next-generation containerized hybrid manufacturing system for defense applications, integrating the Meltio Engine Blue into Snowbird’s deployable manufacturing platform.

Designed for expeditionary and contested environments, the system combines additive and subtractive manufacturing capabilities within a ruggedized, containerized unit, enabling the production, repair, and replacement of mission-critical components directly at the point of need.

Hybrid manufacturing for deployed defense operations
At the core of the solution is Snowbird’s SAMM Tech (Scalable Advanced Manufacturing Module) platform, powered by the Meltio Engine Blue laser-wire directed energy deposition (DED) system. The platform features a patented gantry-mounted hybrid manufacturing cell capable of processing both metal and plastic materials.

The integrated system supports a wide range of industrial metals—including aluminum, titanium, and marine-grade bronze—materials commonly required for defense, aerospace, and naval applications. This allows deployed forces to restore structural and functional components without reliance on centralized supply chains.

By enabling just-in-time manufacturing and repair, the system reduces logistics burdens, shortens lead times, and increases mission readiness in austere operating environments.

Designed for rapid deployment and logistics compatibility
The containerized manufacturing unit is fully compatible with existing military logistics infrastructure and engineered for global mobility. Its modular, robust construction allows operation in extreme land and maritime conditions, supporting forward-deployed manufacturing across joint and naval forces.

The system has already demonstrated operational value, including real-world naval use cases such as the rapid repair of a reverse osmosis pump aboard a U.S. Navy vessel—restoring freshwater production within hours and avoiding an early return to port.

Strengthening supply-chain resilience through hybrid AM
The collaboration reflects the growing adoption of hybrid additive–subtractive manufacturing as a key enabler for defense sustainment and operational resilience.

“This collaboration further validates the role of laser-wire directed energy deposition technology in the most demanding defense environments,” said Scott Morse, Chief Executive of Snowbird Technologies. “Integrating the Meltio Engine Blue into our next-generation SAMM Tech platform demonstrates how reliable, repeatable hybrid manufacturing can be delivered exactly where it is needed.”

From Meltio’s perspective, the project reinforces the suitability of its technology for expeditionary operations.

“Defense organizations require manufacturing solutions that are reliable, flexible, and deployable,” said Gabriel Ortiz, Americas Channel Manager at Meltio. “This integration shows how Meltio technology can strengthen supply-chain resilience and maintain operational readiness in challenging environments.”

Public debut at MILAM 2026
Snowbird and Meltio will showcase the containerized hybrid manufacturing system at the Military Additive Manufacturing Summit & Technology Showcase, taking place February 3–5, 2026, in Tampa, Florida, at booth #125.

As the largest military-focused additive manufacturing event in North America, MILAM provides a strategic forum for defense, government, and industry stakeholders exploring deployable manufacturing solutions.
