CJ3 Gen2 Enters Operational Service

Textron Aviation has placed the Cessna Citation CJ3 Gen2 into operational service following Federal Aviation Administration certification in October 2025. The first aircraft were delivered to launch customers and long-time Citation operators, marking the latest evolution of the Citation Gen2 family with targeted upgrades driven by structured customer feedback.

Customer-driven evolution of the CJ3 platform
The CJ3 Gen2 was developed through Textron Aviation’s Customer Advisory Board, comprising owners, pilots, and maintenance professionals. Feedback from this group directly influenced both cockpit ergonomics and cabin functionality, focusing on workload reduction, accessibility, and mission flexibility rather than changes to the aircraft’s core performance envelope.

This approach reflects a broader trend in business aviation toward incremental, operator-informed refinement of proven platforms, balancing certification risk with measurable usability gains.

Cockpit upgrades focused on workload and ergonomics
One of the most tangible changes is the addition of 4.5 inches (11.4 cm) of extra pilot legroom. This modification improves seat access and egress, particularly relevant for high-frequency operations and training environments where repeated cockpit entry and exit can affect fatigue and efficiency.

The flight deck is based on the latest version of the Garmin G3000 avionics suite, incorporating updated software and hardware. Key elements include Garmin autothrottle functionality, which automates thrust management while providing flight-envelope protection, reducing pilot workload during high-task phases such as climb, approach, and go-around.

Touchscreen Controllers provide a centralized, intuitive interface for avionics interaction, while the GDL60 datalink enables wireless aircraft connectivity. This supports remote flight-plan transfer, automated database updates, and wireless transmission of aircraft diagnostic data, improving dispatch readiness and maintenance coordination.

Configurable cabin for varied mission profiles
Inside the cabin, the CJ3 Gen2 introduces a fully customizable interior layout with seating for up to ten occupants. Rather than a fixed configuration, operators can tailor seating, finishes, and functional zones to match owner-flown, charter, or corporate shuttle missions.

An externally serviceable lavatory has been retained to simplify ground servicing and minimize cabin disruption between flights—an operational consideration particularly relevant for high-utilization light jets.

Positioning within the light jet segment
By focusing on avionics automation, pilot ergonomics, and cabin adaptability, the CJ3 Gen2 positions itself as a usability-focused update within the light jet category. The entry into service demonstrates how incremental design changes—validated through customer advisory structures and certified by the Federal Aviation Administration—can deliver practical operational benefits without altering the aircraft’s established performance characteristics.

For existing Citation operators, the CJ3 Gen2 represents continuity with measurable improvements in cockpit efficiency and cabin flexibility, aligned with current expectations for connected, pilot-assistive business aircraft.
