Safran Electronics & Defense has secured a contract with the NATO Helicopter Management Agency (NAHEMA) to develop Eurofl’Eye, a distributed panoramic vision system for NH90 helicopters operated by France and Spain. The system is designed to enhance pilot awareness by integrating wide-field imagery into helmet displays in challenging operational conditions.
Panoramic Vision for Helicopter Flight Operations
Eurofl’Eye is an advanced Distributed Aperture System (DAS) that synthesizes visual data from six wide-field-of-view infrared cameras to create a comprehensive external view for NH90 pilots. The fused imagery is delivered in real time to helmet-mounted displays, aligned to the pilot’s line of sight. This configuration supports navigation and situational awareness in degraded visual environments such as night operations, dust, or fog.
The system’s architecture, combining multiple infrared inputs with real-time processing, provides a broader and more continuous visual field than traditional forward-looking systems. For helicopter missions that frequently encounter low visibility and complex terrain, this panoramic capability contributes to more informed decision-making and reduced cognitive load on crews.
Integration with Helmet Displays
The Eurofl’Eye output is designed for compatibility with helmet-mounted displays such as the TopOwl system developed by Thales, overlaying critical visual data directly within the pilot’s natural viewpoint. Delivering sightlines aligned with head orientation enables pilots to maintain a comprehensive external view without shifting focus to separate instruments, an important factor in low-altitude maneuvering and tactical flight profiles.
Deployment is planned initially on NH90 TTH transport helicopters operated by French and Spanish forces, aligning with national defense requirements specified by the French Direction Générale de l’Armement (DGA) and the Spanish Dirección General de Armamento y Material (DGAM). Development is conducted in partnership with NHIndustries (NHI) and Thales under the NAHEMA contract framework.
Technical Application and Operational Benefits
In the context of military aviation, enhanced vision systems like Eurofl’Eye serve as mission support technology that extends operational capabilities. By presenting a fused panoramic view, the system aids in obstacle avoidance, navigation in constrained environments, and target acquisition during reconnaissance or transport missions. Its reliance on infrared imaging enables performance in both day and night operations without dependence on ambient light.
The technology contributes to improved safety margins and mission precision, addressing common helicopter flight challenges where traditional cockpit visuals and sensor systems may be insufficient. It further aligns with broader trends in the aerospace data ecosystem, where integrated sensor fusion and real-time data presentation are increasingly critical to operational effectiveness.
Collaborative Development and Strategic Context
Eurofl’Eye represents a coordinated effort among European defense industry partners to advance helicopter avionics and pilot assistance systems. Safran’s role in this program underscores its position in developing onboard intelligence solutions for complex operational environments. Thales contributes helmet display integration, while NHIndustries facilitates platform-level adaptation for the NH90 fleet.
The development of Eurofl’Eye aligns with broader modernization initiatives for tactical rotorcraft within NATO member states, where sensor enhancement and situational awareness technologies are prioritized to meet evolving mission requirements.
The Eurofl’Eye system introduces a consolidated panoramic visual capability to NH90 helicopter operations, integrating infrared camera inputs and helmet-mounted display technology to enhance pilot situational awareness. Its development under a NAHEMA contract with European partners addresses specific national defense objectives and contributes to advancing helicopter avionics through real-time, fused sensor data.
