Saab has signed a master service agreement with Airservices Australia to modernize and maintain advanced air traffic management systems at the country’s largest airports, including Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, and Perth. The agreement reinforces the long-term partnership between the two organizations and supports the continued digitalization of Australia’s aviation infrastructure.
Advanced tower automation across key hubs
Under the agreement, Airservices Australia will deploy and maintain Saab’s latest tower automation solution powered by the Integrated Air Traffic Control Suite (I-ATS). The advanced automation platform will be installed at Australia’s four busiest airports and kept continuously updated to ensure long-term operational performance and regulatory compliance. The system architecture also allows for future expansion to additional airports across the country.
Saab’s I-ATS advanced automation supports controllers with enhanced situational awareness, improved traffic flow management, and higher operational resilience, contributing to safer and more efficient airport operations as traffic volumes continue to grow.
Establishment of an ATM centre of excellence
In addition to technology deployment, Saab will establish an Air Traffic Management (ATM) Centre of Excellence in Australia. The centre will support Airservices Australia’s operational needs, system development, and long-term innovation objectives, strengthening local expertise and technical capability within the region.
The initiative is designed to enable closer collaboration, faster system evolution, and sustained digital development of Australia’s air navigation services.
Supporting long-term aviation modernization
“At Saab we are transforming our product portfolio to adapt to the evolving new digital landscape and we look forward to shaping this in close collaboration with Airservices Australia,” said Cecilia Larsson, Head of Saab Air Traffic Management.
Mark Hind, Chief Technology Enablement Officer at Airservices Australia, highlighted the strategic importance of the agreement: “Airservices Australia welcomes the continued partnership with Saab through this new service agreement, which supports our major airports with advanced tower automation technology. Saab’s investment in an ATM Centre of Excellence in Australia aligns with our commitment to innovation and the safe, efficient management of air traffic across the country.”
National airspace responsibility
Airservices Australia is a government-owned organization responsible for managing approximately 11 percent of the world’s airspace and providing aviation rescue and fire-fighting services at Australia’s busiest airports. The organization delivers tower and approach services that support the safe and orderly movement of aircraft across major airports, regional facilities, and remote aerodromes nationwide.
Through this agreement, Saab and Airservices Australia aim to strengthen the technological foundation of Australia’s air traffic management system while supporting long-term safety, efficiency, and resilience in one of the world’s most complex aviation environments.
