Snowbird Technologies will participate in the Rim of the Pacific Exercise 2026 (RIMPAC 2026) as part of the Naval Postgraduate School’s Consortium for Advanced Manufacturing Research and Education (CAMRE) distributed manufacturing program. The cooperation focuses on deploying containerized additive manufacturing and CNC machining systems to support maritime sustainment and field maintenance operations in naval environments.
Maritime Manufacturing Cooperation
The cooperation involves Snowbird Technologies, the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) through CAMRE, and FLEETWERX. The initiative supports distributed advanced manufacturing capabilities for defense logistics and expeditionary maintenance applications.
CAMRE coordinates a network of more than 50 advanced manufacturing nodes intended to produce replacement and readiness parts closer to operational locations. FLEETWERX acts as a partnership intermediary between government organizations, industry, and academia to integrate industrial technologies into naval operational testing environments.
Snowbird Technologies contributes its SAMM Tech platform, a modular manufacturing system combining metal additive manufacturing, polymer additive manufacturing, and CNC subtractive machining within a containerized architecture designed for transportable deployment.
Technical Integration and System Roles
The SAMM Tech platform integrates technologies from Meltio, Slice Engineering, and FANUC into a compact manufacturing cell intended for field and maritime operations. The system combines additive and subtractive manufacturing processes to support rapid part fabrication, machining, and repair activities in remote or operational environments.
Within the cooperation framework, CAMRE oversees the distributed manufacturing experiment and operational coordination, while FLEETWERX supports technology integration and evaluation activities. Snowbird Technologies is responsible for deployment, operation, and technical validation of the manufacturing platform during maritime and shipyard operations.
The distributed manufacturing approach is intended to reduce dependency on centralized logistics chains by enabling localized production of maintenance components and replacement parts. Such systems are increasingly relevant for industrial automation and defense sustainment applications where supply chain delays can affect operational readiness.
Deployment During RIMPAC 2026
RIMPAC 2026 will take place from June 24 to July 31 in and around the Hawaiian Islands and involves naval forces from 31 nations. The SAMM Tech system will operate during transit from U.S. Navy Base San Diego to Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard before supporting on-site manufacturing activities throughout the exercise.
The deployment expands on demonstrations conducted during RIMPAC 2024, including additive manufacturing and machining operations aboard USS Somerset. During that exercise, the system produced and machined a replacement bushing for a reverse osmosis generator within 34 hours, demonstrating the feasibility of onboard manufacturing for maintenance support.
Operational Applications
The cooperation focuses on maritime sustainment, distributed manufacturing, and digital infrastructure for defense logistics. Target applications include replacement part production, shipboard equipment repair, expeditionary maintenance support, and reduced logistics response times in maritime environments.
According to FLEETWERX Program Manager Ethan Brown, the exercise provides an opportunity to evaluate expeditionary manufacturing technologies under operational maritime conditions to support maintenance and sustainment closer to the point of need.
