To address the rigorous manufacturing demands of next-generation nanosatellites, COMAT partnered with software developer OPEN MIND Technologies to implement the hyperMILL CAM solution. This deployment optimized 5-axis machining operations, directly improving process security and productivity for complex aerospace applications.

Operational Challenges in the New Space Sector
The space industry is undergoing a structural shift driven by New Space initiatives. Historically, satellite programs relied on one-off production runs or minimal batch sizes. In contrast, modern nanosatellite constellations require larger manufacturing volumes, compressed lead times, and higher overall productivity. For space equipment manufacturers, this transition results in highly complex component designs and strict industrial performance standards. During this scaling phase, the existing CAM system utilized by the production unit reached its operational limits, prompting a search for a more robust digital manufacturing infrastructure.

Selecting a High-Performance Machining Solution
To resolve these technical bottlenecks, the engineering team conducted trials comparing multiple systems using highly complex prototype parts. The primary selection criteria included computational speed, programming flexibility, and capabilities in simultaneous 5-axis machining. Following these trials, the manufacturer selected hyperMILL to control its 3-, 4-, and 5-axis machining centers. The software demonstrated the required processing power and implementation flexibility necessary to program the intricate geometries characteristic of space equipment.

Enhancing Precision and Process Safety
Components destined for scientific space missions mandate exceptional manufacturing standards, often involving difficult-to-machine materials, flawless surface finishes, and micron-level tolerances. In an environment where minor deviations lead to part rejection, the facility integrated the hyperMILL MAXX Machining performance module alongside VIRTUAL Machining functions for 5-axis optimization.

The system's integrated simulation of the ISO code accurately maps the exact kinematics of the machine tools on the shop floor. This digital twin capability allows programmers to verify operations prior to physical cutting, ensuring collision avoidance and safe machining for high-value components where reliability is critical.

Quantifiable Production Improvements
The deployment of the new CAM solution yielded measurable improvements in daily operations, particularly during the initial material removal phases. Alexis Lannay, head of the production unit at COMAT, highlighted the operational gains: “We have seen a time saving of around 25% on roughing. Furthermore, the accuracy of the generated toolpaths eliminates any unnecessary movement.” By combining precise toolpath generation with verified machine simulation, the facility successfully adapted its manufacturing workflows to meet the escalating volume and precision requirements of modern satellite networks.
